Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made history in international motorsport after winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship, becoming the first driver from the United States to claim the prestigious title.

The 19-year-old secured the championship in dramatic fashion at the final round of the season in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday, September 13, finishing second in the final race to hold off his closest rival, British driver Freddie Slater.

Ugochukwu entered the decisive weekend level on points with Slater after a season-long battle that had seen the championship lead change hands. With everything to play for in the final race, the Nigerian-American produced the kind of controlled performance required to secure the crown rather than risk throwing away the opportunity through unnecessary aggression.

Driving for Campos Racing, Ugochukwu crossed the finish line in second place to finish the championship with 159 points, 14 points ahead of Slater, who ended the season on 145 points.

Finland’s Tuukka Taponen won the final race after starting from pole position, while Ugochukwu followed him home in second and Pedro Clerot completed the podium in third.

The race itself provided plenty of tension. Taponen made a strong start and maintained the lead through the opening stages, while Ugochukwu remained firmly in contention behind him.

A late Safety Car intervention created a final-lap sprint and briefly opened the possibility of a dramatic change in the order. But Ugochukwu kept his composure, avoided trouble and brought his Campos Racing car home safely to secure the championship.

After the race, the new champion explained that the strategy was simple: avoid mistakes and finish the job.

“We knew we just had to keep it clean to clinch the title, and that’s what we did. No mistakes, brought it home and super pleased,” Ugochukwu said.

His achievement represents another major milestone in a rapidly developing motorsport career that has already attracted international attention.

Born and raised in New York City, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian fashion model Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi. Although he races under the American flag, his Nigerian heritage has made his progress particularly significant to motorsport followers in Nigeria and across Africa.

His journey to the top level of junior single-seater racing began in karting, where he quickly established himself as one of the sport’s promising young talents.

Ugochukwu went on to compete in British Formula 4, Italian Formula 4 and other junior categories before making further progress through Formula Regional competition. He won the Euro 4 Championship in 2023 and later produced another historic performance at the 2024 Macau Grand Prix, where he became the first American winner of the event in more than four decades.

Earlier in 2026, he also captured the Formula Regional Oceania Championship after a highly successful campaign in New Zealand.

His progress eventually brought him to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, one of the most important stepping stones for young drivers hoping to reach Formula 1.

The 2026 campaign proved to be his breakthrough season. Racing for Campos Racing, Ugochukwu demonstrated consistency and maturity throughout the year, eventually putting himself in position to fight for the championship until the final race.

His latest success also places his name alongside a group of former Formula 3 champions who have gone on to compete at the highest level of motorsport.

Former F3 champions such as Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto have already progressed to Formula 1, making the championship an important platform for young drivers seeking a future in the world’s premier single-seater racing series.

For Ugochukwu, however, the immediate achievement is already historic.

By becoming the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship, he has added another remarkable chapter to a career that continues to attract attention on both sides of the Atlantic.

His success is also likely to generate renewed interest in his Nigerian roots, particularly among young Nigerians who have followed his rise from karting to international single-seater racing.

With the Formula 3 crown now secured, Ugochukwu’s next challenge will be to continue developing his career and move closer to the ultimate target of competing in Formula 1.

For now, the teenager can celebrate a landmark achievement that has placed his name firmly in the history of Formula 3 and strengthened his reputation as one of the rising talents in global motorsport.
