Nigerian sports stars have enjoyed a memorable 2026, reaching significant career milestones across European football, the Nigeria Premier Football League and international cricket, underlining the country’s growing influence across different sporting competitions.
From Ademola Lookman’s goalscoring achievement in Spain to Alex Iwobi’s century of appearances for the Super Eagles, several Nigerian athletes have reached landmark figures that reflect years of consistency, dedication and professional development.
Among the latest achievements is Tolu Arokodare’s 100th career goal, which the Nigerian striker scored during Ajax’s 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Conference League on October 22.
Arokodare came off the bench and broke the deadlock before setting up Abdellah Ouazane for Ajax’s second goal in stoppage time.
The achievement represented another significant moment in the striker’s career, which has taken him through several European leagues, including Latvia, France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands.
His ability to continue finding the net across different competitions has helped establish him as one of Nigeria’s attacking players to watch.
Ademola Lookman also reached the 100-goal mark in February, scoring on his debut for Atlético Madrid during a commanding 5-0 victory over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-final.
The Nigerian forward made an immediate impression after joining the Spanish club from Atalanta during the winter transfer window. In addition to finding the net, Lookman provided an assist for Antoine Griezmann as Atlético produced an emphatic performance.
The milestone further strengthened Lookman’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most productive attacking talents in European football.
His achievements in Italy, particularly during his spell at Atalanta, had already established him as a dangerous forward capable of influencing important matches. His move to Spain presented a new challenge, but his debut suggested he could make an immediate contribution.
In England, Taiwo Awoniyi celebrated another important milestone when he made his 100th appearance for Nottingham Forest in May.
The striker marked the occasion in spectacular fashion, scoring twice in Forest’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Awoniyi opened the scoring with a header before completing his brace in the second half, helping his side secure an important away victory.
Since joining Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, the Nigerian forward has experienced both promising performances and frustrating injury setbacks. His brace against Chelsea provided a memorable way to mark his century of appearances for the club.
Alex Iwobi achieved one of the most significant milestones in Nigerian international football in June when he earned his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles against Portugal in an international friendly.
The Fulham midfielder became the fourth Nigerian player to reach the century mark, joining former internationals Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.
Iwobi’s achievement reflected more than a decade of international service since making his senior debut in 2015. Having represented England at youth level before choosing Nigeria, he has become a dependable member of the national team across different generations.
His experience in the Premier League has also seen him represent Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, establishing himself as a versatile midfielder capable of operating in several positions.
Moses Simon joined the exclusive 100-cap club in September when Nigeria defeated Madagascar 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
The Paris FC winger became the fifth Nigerian footballer to reach 100 senior international appearances, joining Iwobi, Musa, Yobo and Enyeama.
Simon has remained an important figure for the national team since making his debut in 2015. His pace, versatility and experience have helped him maintain his place through changes in coaching staff and teammates.
Another Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, reached 100 Premier League appearances in October, adding another milestone to his growing career in English football.
The Fulham centre-back has developed into an important defensive figure since joining the London club from Ajax in 2023. His physical presence, defensive ability and confidence in possession have helped him establish himself in the Premier League.
Nathan Tella also celebrated a significant achievement in Germany, making his 100th appearance for Bayer Leverkusen in April during a 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Cologne.
The Nigerian winger provided an assist for Patrik Schick in the match. Since arriving from Southampton in 2023, Tella has been part of Leverkusen’s successful period, including the club’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in the 2023/24 season.
Beyond European football, Godwin Obaje reached the 100-goal mark in the Nigeria Premier Football League in September.
The Rangers International striker converted a penalty in his team’s 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves, becoming one of the few players to score at least 100 goals in the domestic top flight.
Obaje has represented several Nigerian clubs, including Wikki Tourists, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Plateau United and Abia Warriors. He previously won the NPFL Golden Boot with Wikki Tourists in 2016.
His achievement highlighted the importance of domestic footballers in a year when Nigerian players competing abroad also celebrated major career landmarks.
Meanwhile, Nigerian cricket received its own moment of celebration through Kenneth Boniface, who recorded his maiden century at the ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifying tournament in Rwanda in August.
Boniface scored 100 runs off 74 deliveries against Sierra Leone. He finished the competition with 251 runs from five innings and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
His performance offered an encouraging sign for Nigerian cricket, demonstrating the potential of the country’s emerging talent on the international stage.
Taken together, these achievements illustrate the different ways Nigerian athletes are making their mark in 2026. While footballers have dominated the headlines through goals, club appearances and international caps, Boniface’s cricketing success has provided another example of the country’s sporting potential.
For the players involved, reaching the 100 mark represents more than a statistical achievement. It reflects persistence, adaptation and the ability to remain competitive across demanding professional environments.
As the year progresses, these Nigerian stars will have opportunities to build on their achievements and establish further milestones in their respective careers.
