LAGOS, NIGERIA — The National Open University of Nigeria has matriculated 36 inmates at the Ikoyi custodial centre in Lagos. The inmates will pursue undergraduate, master’s, and PhD programmes.
The matriculation ceremony was held on Monday at the custodial centre. It was attended by officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service and NOUN.
The Matriculation
The inmates were admitted into various programmes. These include law, business administration, and social sciences.
NOUN said the initiative is part of its commitment to providing education for all. It said education is a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration.
“We believe that education can transform lives. These inmates deserve a second chance. We are giving them the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills,” a NOUN official said.
Partnership with NCoS
The matriculation was made possible through a partnership between NOUN and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The NCoS said the initiative would help to reduce recidivism. It said educated inmates are more likely to reintegrate into society.
“This is a positive development. We commend NOUN for this initiative. It will help our inmates to become better citizens,” an NCoS official said.
Inmates’ Reactions
The inmates expressed joy at the opportunity. They said they were grateful to NOUN for giving them a chance to further their education.
“I never thought I would have the chance to study again. I am grateful for this opportunity. I will not waste it,” one of the matriculating inmates said.
What This Means
The matriculation is a significant development for prison reform in Nigeria. It highlights the importance of education in rehabilitation.
It also shows that inmates can be productive members of society if given the right support.
What Happens Next
The inmates will begin their studies immediately. NOUN will provide them with study materials and support.
For now, the focus is on ensuring that the inmates succeed in their academic pursuits. The programme is expected to be extended to other custodial centres across the country.
