ENUGU, NIGERIA — A prominent political voice from Nsukka Zone has called on the people of the area to awaken to the reality of political marginalisation, arguing that the 2027 governorship election presents a historic opportunity to correct decades of inequitable representation through the African Democratic Congress candidate, Ocho Obodoeze Chukwuma.
The call was made in a statement by Hon Ogbobe Chidera Stanley, who highlighted the glaring disparity in political representation between Nsukka and Enugu zones since the return of democracy in 1999. According to the statement, Enugu Zone has governed the state for over 23 years, including the current administration of Governor Peter Mbah, while Nsukka Zone has held the governorship for only about eight years.
“Are you aware that since 1999, Nsukka Zone has governed Enugu State for only about eight years, while Enugu Zone has governed for over 23 years, including the current four-year administration of Peter Mbah?” Stanley asked. “When exactly are our people going to wake up and understand what is happening?”
The statement also noted that Enugu Zone has retained the federal ministerial position since 1999, further consolidating its grip on political power at both state and federal levels. This concentration of influence, the statement argued, has come at the expense of Nsukka Zone, which accounts for approximately 56 percent of the state’s population and voting strength, compared with Enugu Zone’s 44 percent.
“The good thing is that Nsukka people have a choice on the ballot in 2027 through Ocho Obodoeze Chukwuma of the ADC. This is bigger than party politics. It is about fairness, equity, representation and giving every part of Enugu State a genuine opportunity to lead,” Stanley declared.
The statement frames the 2027 election as a defining moment for Nsukka Zone, urging residents to look beyond partisan loyalties and support a candidate who would restore balance to the state’s political landscape. The argument echoes broader discussions across Nigeria about zoning, rotational governance, and the need for inclusive political arrangements that reflect the demographic realities of states and regions.
As the 2027 elections approach, the ADC candidate’s campaign is expected to intensify its messaging around equity and representation, seeking to galvanise support from voters who feel marginalised by the current political order. For Nsukka Zone, the ballot box may offer the most direct path to redressing what its advocates describe as a long-standing imbalance in Enugu State’s governance.
