(DDM) – The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it will arraign a National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, leader, Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as “Shameleon,” over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the 55-year-old union leader was arrested following a violent altercation on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025.
Reports indicate that the confrontation began after the victim was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated quickly as Adio, along with some associates, allegedly pounced on the rider.
The dispatch rider was reportedly struck multiple times with a helmet and fists until he collapsed.
Bystanders rushed him to the hospital, but he later died as a result of the injuries sustained during the assault.
Confirming the case, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, stated that the suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti-Yaba.
He further confirmed that Adio will be formally arraigned on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has stepped into the matter, demanding accountability and full prosecution of all individuals involved.
Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the incident in strong terms.
He described the killing as an “act that must be condemned by every well-meaning Nigerian.”
Adedeji added that the tragic death highlights the dangers faced by ordinary workers simply trying to earn a living.
He said: “We can just imagine a dispatch rider who left home to earn a living for himself not returning because somebody who thinks he is above the law decided to take his life.”
The lawmaker stressed that the sanctity of human life must be respected, and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
Civil society groups have also reacted, with several activists calling for tougher sanctions against violent actors within transport unions.
Public commentators argue that the arraignment of Adio should serve as a precedent to deter others who believe their social or political influence places them above the law.
The Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public that justice will take its full course in the matter.
