A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Oluwatosin Abidakun, has died in a fatal road crash involving an articulated truck in Ibadan, Oyo State, just days after resuming her primary assignment at the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, October 12, 2026, around Agodi Gardens in Ibadan North Local Government Area, behind the Oyo State Government Secretariat.

According to reports by PUNCH and Pulse Nigeria, Abidakun was returning home after work on a motorcycle with another corps member when the truck rammed into them. She died at the scene, while the other person sustained injuries and was taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for medical attention.

The crash reportedly involved multiple vehicles, with eyewitnesses alleging that the articulated truck had earlier collided with several vehicles around the Sango area before proceeding towards Agodi Gardens.

One eyewitness told PUNCH that the truck had struck several vehicles before reaching the area where the motorcycle carrying the corps members was hit.

Another account alleged that the driver was attempting to escape after the earlier collisions, prompting drivers whose vehicles had been damaged to pursue the truck. However, the circumstances surrounding the earlier crashes and the driver’s alleged attempt to flee had not been independently established in the reports reviewed.

The incident caused significant traffic disruption around Sango and Agodi Gardens as emergency responders attended to victims and worked to clear the affected roads.

The Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Dahunsi, confirmed the crash in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Dahunsi said the incident involved an articulated truck and a motorcycle carrying the corps member. He confirmed that the female corps member died, while the motorcycle rider sustained a fracture in the leg and was evacuated to UCH for treatment. The deceased’s body was taken to the State Hospital morgue.

Abidakun’s death has attracted particular attention because she had only recently resumed her national service at the Oyo State House of Assembly, where she was beginning a new chapter of her life.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful and devastating incident.

Ogundoyin said the circumstances surrounding her death were particularly heartbreaking because the young corps member had only just started her service year, with hopes and aspirations for the future.

He extended his condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and fellow corps members, praying that they would find the strength to endure the loss.

The Speaker also expressed concern for the surviving corps member and prayed for a speedy recovery.

Abidakun’s death has left her family and colleagues mourning a life cut short shortly after she began her national service. Her loss has also renewed concerns about the dangers posed by road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles, particularly when multiple collisions occur within busy urban areas.

As of October 14, 2026, the reports reviewed did not confirm whether the truck driver had been arrested. The FRSC said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Authorities are expected to establish how the series of collisions occurred and determine any responsibility arising from the incident.
