KADUNA, NIGERIA — Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised the Sheikh Muhammad Sambo Memorial Islamic Institute in Rigachikun, Kaduna State, for its innovative approach to blending Islamic education with STEM subjects, describing it as the kind of holistic education that can equip young Nigerians with both strong values and the skills needed to thrive in today’s world.
Obi made the remarks on Saturday after visiting the institution, which he said he had visited twice in the past and supported in his own way. He arrived in Abuja from London earlier in the day on an Air Peace flight that landed 20 minutes ahead of schedule, before proceeding immediately to Kaduna.
“I was very impressed by the level of progress the institution has made, particularly its approach to blending Islamic education with STEM subjects. This is the kind of holistic education that can equip our young people with both strong values and the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s world,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra governor reiterated his commitment to investing in education and healthcare, developing human capital, creating opportunities, and lifting Nigerians out of poverty. He emphasised that every Nigerian, regardless of religion, ethnicity, region, or political affiliation, deserves to feel that the country belongs to them.
“My commitment remains to investing in education and healthcare, developing our human capital, creating opportunities, and lifting our people out of poverty. Every Nigerian, regardless of religion, ethnicity, region, or political affiliation, deserves to feel that this country belongs to them,” he said.
Obi’s visit to the Islamic institute is part of his ongoing engagement with communities across the country ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The NDC candidate has consistently emphasised the importance of education and human capital development as pillars of national transformation, and his visit to Kaduna underscores his commitment to reaching out to diverse communities and religious institutions.
The Sheikh Muhammad Sambo Memorial Islamic Institute is known for its integrated curriculum, which combines traditional Islamic scholarship with modern subjects such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The institution’s approach has been praised by education experts as a model for bridging the gap between religious and secular education in Nigeria.
Obi’s visit was warmly received by the management and students of the institute, who expressed appreciation for his continued support and interest in their development. The institution’s leadership noted that Obi had been a consistent supporter of their work and had contributed to their growth over the years.
“A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi concluded, reiterating his campaign slogan and his vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
