The wife of Delta State content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as Odogwu Asaba, has apologised to women following intense backlash over her earlier public defence of her husband amid serious allegations surrounding the death of 20-year-old Favour Agbro.
In a new video, she expressed regret over her decision to publicly speak in defence of Ogbonna and acknowledged that her comments had offended many women.
She said she should not have made the earlier appearance and apologised to those who felt hurt or disappointed by her position.
The apology comes after her initial comments generated widespread criticism online. At the time, Ogbonna’s wife had rejected allegations that her husband raped Favour, describing the reported encounter as an affair and insisting that she believed he was incapable of committing rape.
She also urged people not to treat social media discussions as a substitute for the legal process.
However, following the backlash, she appeared to reconsider her decision to publicly address the allegations.
In her latest statement, she acknowledged some of the criticism directed at her, including descriptions of her as being overly supportive of her husband at the expense of other women. She reportedly questioned whether Ogbonna would have offered the same level of public support if their positions had been reversed.
The woman also opened up about the circumstances that influenced her original decision.
According to her account, she is financially dependent on her husband, who provides for her, their four children and her parents. She explained that fear over what could happen to her family if Ogbonna were to reject her after his release contributed to her decision to stand publicly behind him.
Despite the apology, she indicated that she personally continues to believe her husband’s account that the encounter with Favour was consensual. She said she would nevertheless refrain from making further public statements about the matter and would deal with the situation privately, particularly with the wellbeing of her children in mind.
The controversy stems from allegations surrounding the death of Favour Agbro. Reports from Nigerian media outlets say Ogbonna was arrested by the Delta State Police Command following the young woman’s death.
According to allegations attributed to the police investigation, Favour had reportedly been invited to Asaba under the impression that she would receive assistance or training relating to content creation and monetisation. It was subsequently alleged that she was taken to a hotel, where an assault occurred.
Reports further state that Favour later died after ingesting a toxic substance.
Ogbonna’s alleged involvement in the events remains a matter for law enforcement and the legal process to establish. His wife’s account also differs significantly from the allegations against him.
Her latest apology has consequently shifted attention from the original defence to the difficult personal circumstances she says influenced her actions.
The case has also reignited conversations about the pressure families can face when a loved one becomes the subject of serious criminal allegations, as well as the importance of allowing investigations and courts to establish the facts.
For now, the allegations remain contested, and the outcome of the ongoing investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings will determine what can ultimately be established about the circumstances surrounding Favour Agbro’s death.
