The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill providing a legal framework for the safe termination of pregnancy in cases permitted by law.
The bill, titled H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, seeks to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, promote safe motherhood and strengthen reproductive health rights in the state.
The bill was passed on Thursday during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its Chairman, Wahab Haruna.
The report was adopted after a motion moved by Haruna and seconded by the Chief Whip, Omobola Bakare.
The bill was subsequently considered and passed clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole House.
The motion for the third reading was moved by Babatunde Tella and seconded by Lukman Adeleye before lawmakers unanimously approved it through a voice vote.
The Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Sakiru Adabakin, thereafter read the bill for the third time.
Elemide directed that a clean copy of the legislation be transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
Four other bills also passed first reading during the sitting. They are the Gender Balance in Political and Public Offices Bill, 2026; Group Liability for Offences of Violence, Extortion and Secret Societies (GLOVES) Bill, 2026; Victims’ Rights Bill, 2026; and Ogun State Human Sacrifice Prevention and Prohibition Bill, 2026.
Assembly pardons ex-Deputy Speaker
In a separate development, the Assembly resolved to pardon a former Deputy Speaker of the Ninth Legislature, Dare Kadiri, by converting his previous removal from office to a resignation.
The decision followed consideration of an appeal submitted by Kadiri, asking the Assembly to convert his impeachment and removal as Deputy Speaker to voluntary resignation.
Presenting the report of the Committee of the Whole House, the Chief Whip, Omobola Bakare, said the committee met on August 18, 2026, to consider Kadiri’s appeal.
The committee said the request was not intended to revisit the circumstances surrounding his impeachment, apportion blame, play politics or establish his innocence over the issues that led to his removal.
Rather, the report said Kadiri made the request as a former member of the House who wanted to bring that chapter of his public service to a “peaceful and dignified conclusion.”
Bakare moved for the adoption of the report, while Bisi Oyedele seconded the motion. The report was subsequently supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
