ENUGU, NIGERIA — The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned politicians, political parties, and electoral officials against manipulating the 2027 general elections in Igbo communities.
The organisation said it would resist attempts to steal votes, impose unwanted leaders, or undermine the people’s right to choose their representatives. It declared that no governor, political party, or influential politician had the right to determine the political future of Ndigbo against their wishes.
The Warning
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday. It was signed by the factional Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa.
The organisation called on Igbo youths, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organisations to mobilise voters. It urged them to protect the integrity of the electoral process through lawful and peaceful means.
The warning covers Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. It also covers Igbo-speaking communities in Delta State, including Anioma, and Rivers State, including Ikwerre communities.
Protecting the Votes
Ohanaeze maintained that eligible voters must be allowed to cast their ballots without intimidation, coercion, vote-buying, ballot snatching, or manipulation of results.
The statement disclosed that the Imeobi, the organisation’s highest decision-making organ, had approved its proposed Igbo Blueprint for the 2027 elections. The blueprint prioritises voter participation, electoral accountability, and the protection of the people’s mandate.
It urged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and reject voter apathy. It also advised voters to remain vigilant during voting, counting, and the announcement of results.
Call for Credible Elections
The organisation called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the 2027 elections were free, fair, and credible. It stressed that declared results must reflect the actual votes cast.
Invoking the cultural symbolism of the Nzọgbu Nzọgbu spirit and the Amadioha deity, Ohanaeze said the Igbo people’s resolve to resist injustice should not be underestimated.
It urged voters to assess candidates based on their integrity, competence, and commitment to the people’s interests. It warned that politicians who had failed to fulfil their promises should not expect automatic electoral support.
Accountability in Local Government
Beyond the general elections, Ohanaeze called for greater accountability in local government administration. It urged voters to scrutinise how public funds and council allocations were managed. It said any proven diversion of funds should be investigated.
The organisation further called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws and address loopholes that enable malpractice.
“Ohanaeze’s position is clear: the votes of Ndigbo belong to the people, not to politicians or political parties. No individual has the right to steal the people’s mandate, and no political ambition justifies the subversion of democracy,” the statement said.
What This Means
The warning is a significant intervention from a major socio-cultural group. It highlights the importance of credible elections and the determination of the Igbo people to protect their votes.
As the 2027 elections approach, Ohanaeze’s message is likely to resonate with voters. It also serves as a caution to political actors who might seek to manipulate the process.
