Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has opened up about her long-term marriage to Captain Matthew Ekeinde, offering an unconventional perspective on love, commitment and the realities of staying together for decades.

The actress made the remarks during an interview on the “With Chude” show, where she spoke candidly about her relationship and how she and her husband have approached marriage over the years.

Omotola, who has been married to Captain Ekeinde since 1996, explained that their relationship is built around understanding each other and allowing one another to be themselves rather than treating marriage as something that must always be taken extremely seriously.

“My husband knows that I don’t love him all the time. There are days that I’d see fantabulous guys and I’d be like, ‘I picked this one over you?’” she said.

She also explained that her husband understands her personality and that they have never approached their marriage as something that should restrict their individuality.

“My husband knows who I am and we don’t carry marriage on the head like it’s something sacred. Our marriage is not that serious,” she said.

Omotola’s comments have generated reactions online, with some social media users interpreting her remarks in different ways. Some questioned whether her comments suggested an unconventional arrangement within the marriage, while others viewed them as an honest description of how couples can navigate long-term relationships.

The actress, however, appeared to be speaking about the importance of giving each other space and recognising that people experience different emotions throughout a long-term relationship.

Her marriage to Captain Ekeinde has lasted nearly three decades, with the couple raising four children together. Over the years, Omotola has occasionally spoken about the importance of individuality, friendship and mutual understanding in sustaining a relationship.

Her latest comments have once again drawn attention to the actress’s perspective on marriage, particularly her suggestion that couples should not necessarily allow societal expectations to dictate how they understand or manage their relationships.

Rather than presenting marriage as a relationship in which emotions remain unchanged at all times, Omotola’s remarks highlighted the reality that long-term partnerships involve different phases, challenges and feelings.

The actress’s comments have continued to generate discussion online, with many debating whether her approach reflects a relaxed understanding of marriage or a different way of defining commitment after decades together.
