AKURE, NIGERIA — The Ondo State Government has arrested 30 people for allegedly violating environmental sanitation laws during the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.
The arrests were disclosed by a government aide, who said the suspects were apprehended for failing to comply with regulations governing environmental cleanliness during the exercise.
The monthly sanitation programme is part of the state government’s efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment through public participation and enforcement of existing environmental laws.
Residents are expected to use the designated sanitation period to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels, remove refuse and ensure that their immediate environments are properly maintained.
The government has repeatedly warned against indiscriminate waste disposal, obstruction of drainage channels and other practices that contribute to environmental pollution and flooding.
Ondo State authorities have also emphasised the importance of residents’ compliance with sanitation regulations, noting that maintaining a clean environment requires cooperation between government agencies and members of the public.
The monthly exercise is conducted across the state as part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental hygiene and discourage practices that could endanger public health.
The latest arrests underline the government’s continued enforcement of sanitation regulations, although further details about the identities of those arrested, the specific offences involved and possible court proceedings were not available in the initial report.
Residents have continued to be encouraged to take responsibility for their surroundings and comply with environmental regulations to support the state’s sanitation and public health objectives.
