ISTANBUL/MADRID, Europe — Nigerian internationals Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are set for challenging tests in the UEFA Champions League as their clubs prepare for crucial league-phase matches on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Osimhen’s Galatasaray will welcome Spanish champions Barcelona to RAMS Park in Istanbul, while Lookman’s Atletico Madrid host Manchester United at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
Both Nigerian forwards will be hoping to make an impact as their teams seek important points in the competition’s second round of matches.
Osimhen Returns For Barcelona Challenge
Galatasaray face Barcelona after losing 3–1 away to Sporting CP in their opening Champions League fixture. The Turkish side will therefore be looking to respond against opponents who began their campaign with a commanding 5–1 victory over Feyenoord.
Barcelona have also enjoyed a strong start to their domestic campaign, increasing the pressure on Galatasaray ahead of the encounter.
Osimhen enters the match in promising form. The 27-year-old Nigerian striker has scored six goals and provided three assists in five league appearances this season, according to Punch.
He recently returned from a groin injury, coming off the bench against Kasimpasa on Friday, October 9, and assisting Mario Lemina’s 96th-minute goal in Galatasaray’s 3–1 victory.
His return provides Galatasaray with an important attacking option as they attempt to overcome Barcelona.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the threat posed by the Nigerian forward, praising Osimhen’s quality and Galatasaray’s squad ahead of the match.
Osimhen has also faced Barcelona before. He scored for Napoli in a 1–1 draw against the Spanish side in the first leg of their 2024 Champions League round-of-16 tie. Napoli eventually lost the return leg 3–1 and were eliminated.
Galatasaray’s historical record against Barcelona presents another challenge, with the Turkish club recording one win, two draws and five defeats in their previous eight Champions League meetings.
Lookman Faces Manchester United
Atletico Madrid will seek to recover from their 2–1 defeat away to Liverpool in their opening Champions League match when they host Manchester United.
Diego Simeone’s side have since recorded four consecutive victories across competitions, giving them momentum ahead of the meeting.
Manchester United, meanwhile, opened their European campaign with a 4–0 win over Sabah but have struggled to maintain consistency in other competitions.
Lookman has scored once for Atletico across all competitions this season. However, he could begin Tuesday’s match on the bench, with Julian Alvarez and Giuliano Simeone reportedly favoured to lead the attack.
The Nigerian forward has previous experience against Manchester United, having scored against the club while playing for Everton in a 2–1 Premier League defeat in January 2021.
His involvement could provide Atletico with additional attacking options as they seek their first Champions League points of the campaign.
Nigerians Seek A Stronger European Showing
The fixtures offer both Nigerian forwards an opportunity to help their clubs improve their positions in the league phase.
Neither Osimhen nor Lookman recorded a Champions League victory with their respective teams on matchday one, making Tuesday’s encounters important for their European ambitions.
Osimhen will be central to Galatasaray’s efforts to challenge Barcelona’s defence, while Lookman will hope to contribute against a Manchester United side seeking to build on its opening European win.
Both matches are scheduled for 8 p.m. Nigerian time, setting up an evening of high-profile European football for Nigerian supporters.
