UMUAHIA, NIGERIA — Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced plans to harness the state’s agricultural potential. The goal is to achieve food self-sufficiency and become a net exporter of food.
Otti made the announcement on Thursday during an agricultural summit in Umuahia. The event brought together farmers, investors, and policymakers.
The Vision
Otti said Abia has vast agricultural potential. He said the state has fertile land and a favourable climate. He said his administration would invest in modern farming techniques.
“We want to make Abia a food hub. We want to produce enough to feed our people and export to other states,” Otti stated.
Key Initiatives
The governor outlined several initiatives. These include providing improved seedlings and fertilisers to farmers. The government will also invest in irrigation and storage facilities.
Otti said the state would partner with the private sector. He said investors would be encouraged to set up agro-processing plants.
Farmers’ Support
Otti said his administration would support smallholder farmers. He said they would receive training and access to credit.
“We cannot achieve food security without supporting our farmers. They are the backbone of our agricultural sector,” he said.
What This Means
The plan could transform Abia’s economy. Agriculture employs a large portion of the state’s workforce. Boosting the sector would create jobs and reduce poverty.
It would also improve food security. Many Nigerians struggle to afford food. Increased local production would lower prices.
What Happens Next
The government will begin implementing the initiatives. It will also engage with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive agricultural policy.
For now, farmers have welcomed the plan. They said it would boost their productivity and income. They urged the government to follow through on its promises.
