Pastor Bolaji’s Church Moment Sparks Debate Over Women’s Marriage Expectations

A claim circulating on social media has sparked fresh conversations about marriage expectations, financial stability and the kind of partners some women hope to marry.

The claim alleges that Pastor Bolaji Idowu ended a church service after female congregants reportedly shouted “Men Dey,” a Nigerian expression often used humorously to suggest that eligible or financially comfortable men are available.

According to the circulating account, the women were expressing a preference for wealthy partners who could provide financial support, send them money regularly and take them on trips, rather than men they consider financially struggling or stingy.

The story has attracted attention because it touches on an ongoing debate about whether financial security should be a major consideration when choosing a marriage partner and whether couples should prioritise building their lives together or seek partners who are already financially established.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the lead pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre, has previously addressed similar relationship issues in his sermons. In August 2024, he spoke about women seeking financially stable partners, arguing that some wanted to avoid carrying the financial burden of supporting their husbands. His comments generated discussion about money, responsibility and expectations in marriage.

In another sermon reported in 2025, he advised women to support their partners rather than assume responsibility for building their lives entirely. That message also prompted mixed reactions, with some agreeing with his position and others arguing that healthy relationships require mutual support.

However, these earlier sermons do not independently confirm the latest story about the alleged “Men Dey” incident. The specific video or an official statement confirming that the service was ended in response to the women’s remarks could not be verified at the time of writing.

The broader conversation reflects differing views about relationships. While some people consider financial stability an important factor in choosing a spouse, others emphasise character, shared values, emotional maturity and a willingness to work towards common goals.

For now, the alleged church incident remains unverified, and further evidence is needed before the reported reaction can be attributed to Pastor Bolaji Idowu as an established fact.
