Peter Obi’s Camp Confirms Plans to Exit Labour Party, Join Unified Opposition Ahead of 2027
DDM News

There are strong indications that prominent opposition leaders in Nigeria are preparing to leave their current political parties, including the Labour Party, to form a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that this significant move, if finalized, could dramatically reshape the nation’s political landscape and present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Valentine Obienyem, a close aide to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, disclosed this development during an interaction with journalists concerning ongoing negotiations among top opposition stakeholders.
Obienyem confirmed that discussions have advanced to the stage where key opposition actors have resolved to exit their individual political platforms.
He stated, “The agreement is that we’ll leave our various parties and move to the platform we agreed upon.”
Though he did not disclose the name of the new political platform, Obienyem’s remarks reflect serious consultations and political recalculations aimed at creating a more consolidated and effective opposition.
This comes amid growing dissatisfaction with the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, which has been accused of worsening the nation’s economic and security conditions.
The 2023 general elections saw Peter Obi of the Labour Party rise rapidly in popularity, especially among youths and urban voters.
Despite his loss at the polls, his performance signaled a shift in the Nigerian electorate’s behavior and demonstrated the potential of non-traditional political movements to disrupt the dominance of APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Analysts have long argued that Nigeria’s fragmented opposition plays into the hands of the ruling party by diluting votes across multiple candidates.
The proposed merger or coalition of opposition forces is seen as a strategic response to this concern and an effort to avoid a repeat of past electoral defeats.
Talks of forming a new political alliance have gained momentum in recent months, as influential political actors begin to position themselves for the 2027 polls.
Political observers suggest that if this coalition materializes, it could revive the spirit of the 2014 alliance that birthed the APC and led to the defeat of the then-ruling PDP in 2015.
With rising inflation, currency devaluation, insecurity, and mass poverty confronting millions of Nigerians, the 2027 elections are expected to be fiercely contested.
Meanwhile, critics are watching closely to see if the proposed coalition will overcome internal divisions and ideological differences to present a truly united front.
While Obienyem’s revelation has sparked wide interest, many are still cautious, citing previous attempts at forming political coalitions that crumbled under pressure from personal ambitions and political egos.
Nonetheless, political realignments are underway, and the race towards 2027 appears to have begun in earnest.
