The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 45-year-old man, Ani Chidi, over the alleged recording and circulation of a video showing an attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress during a political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw.
Chidi was arraigned before an Enugu East Magistrate’s Court sitting in Nkwo Nike on three counts bordering on cybercrime and alleged criminal defamation.
The charges were filed under Section 24(2)(a)&(c)(i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
According to the police, Chidi recorded and shared footage of the September 12, 2026 attack on social media platforms and online media outlets.
The prosecution also alleged that he falsely accused Ani Nnabuike, Solomon Ifeanyi and Monday Anninwe of being members of the armed group that attacked the NDC meeting.
Police Prosecutor, Ajogwu, presented the case before Chief Magistrate F. E. Chukwu, who ordered that Chidi be remanded in prison custody.
Reacting to the arraignment, the Enugu State chapter of the NDC condemned the prosecution, alleging that the police had turned against a witness who recorded evidence of the attack while suspected perpetrators of the violence were released.
The party called for an independent investigation into the Obuoffia violence and urged authorities to stop using the judicial process against witnesses.
In a statement signed by Sampson Ukwu, Media Aide to the NDC governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, the party described the development as worrisome.
The NDC alleged that the man who recorded the incident was being targeted after capturing video evidence of the attack and called on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene.
The party also urged the Nigeria Police Force to distance itself from what it described as an abuse of the judicial process and called for a fair investigation into the incident.
