ASABA, Nigeria — The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, 40, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” in connection with the alleged rape and subsequent death of a 20-year-old woman, Favour Agbro.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, at the suspect’s invitation. The suspect had reportedly offered to provide financial support and train her in content creation through a programme he promoted on his social media platforms.
Police stated that upon her arrival in Asaba, the suspect allegedly took her to a hotel, where he raped her and subjected her to physical violence. The victim returned home “visibly distressed” and disclosed the incident to her parents before recording a video recounting her experience and the emotional distress she suffered. She subsequently ingested a toxic substance and died despite efforts to save her life.
Her video later went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
The arrest comes days after Ogbonna was seen on Facebook trolling women who request cash gifts from male strangers without “returning the favour to please willing male givers,” a post that drew mixed reactions from his followers.
Upon receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation. Operatives swiftly commenced investigation, leading to Ogbonna’s arrest. During preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly made useful statements, while further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
CP Oyeniyi assured the public of a thorough probe, declaring: “The case will be thoroughly investigated and no aspect of the allegations will be overlooked.” He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring that the investigation is conducted professionally and that appropriate legal action is taken in accordance with the law.
Human rights activists Harrison Gwamnishu and Israel Joe had earlier disclosed the suspect’s arrest. Reports indicate that the suspect has been remanded at Ekpan Police Station in Effurun while investigations continue. The police urged members of the public with useful information to come forward as investigations continue.
The incident has continued to attract public attention, with many Nigerians demanding justice if the allegations are proven.
