The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested Ugwumba Enyinnaya for allegedly impersonating a lawyer and practising for more than 11 years without the required legal qualifications.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, following an investigation into a petition alleging obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly collected ₦650,000 from Chukwu David in March 2026 to facilitate the processing and approval of a street naming in Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The petitioner said Enyinnaya presented himself as an experienced legal practitioner.
Police investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect had been posing as a lawyer despite not being qualified to practise law. The statement added that he admitted during interrogation that he was not a lawyer.
A search of his apartment led to the recovery of several items, including a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal, a portrait of the suspect wearing barrister’s regalia, and purported Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) certificates bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
Other recovered items included a barrister’s robe and wig, court judgments allegedly procured by the suspect, and legal documents such as powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance.
The police said Enyinnaya had been charged to court.
The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Okafor, commended the officers involved in uncovering the alleged impersonation.
She urged residents to verify the credentials of individuals offering legal services and report suspicious activities to the police.
