ABAKALIKI, Nigeria — The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a member of the state’s Neighbourhood Watch security outfit, formerly known as Ebubeagu, after he was attacked by suspected gunmen in Abakaliki.
The victim, identified as Chidiebere Okpara, was reportedly killed on Thursday night while carrying out his duties in Ugwuchara, located in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, said the attack occurred at about 8:30 p.m., adding that the command has launched an investigation to identify those responsible.
Ukandu said no arrests had been made as of the time of his statement but assured residents that security operatives were working to track down the perpetrators.
According to him, the police remain committed to protecting lives and property across the state and would ensure that those behind the killing are brought to justice.
“Investigation has begun into the matter, and we are determined to fish out the perpetrators of the crime. We are committed to safeguarding the lives and property of the people,” the police spokesperson said.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity for security reasons, alleged that the operative was ambushed by armed assailants while on duty.
The witness claimed that the attackers initially opened fire repeatedly on the victim. However, when the gunshots reportedly failed to kill him immediately, the assailants allegedly overpowered him and inflicted fatal machete wounds before fleeing the scene.
The eyewitness said the motive behind the attack remains unclear, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to uncover those responsible and prevent similar incidents.
The killing has heightened concerns over the safety of security personnel and community-based vigilante operatives who assist conventional security agencies in combating crime across Ebonyi State.
The Neighbourhood Watch outfit, formerly known as Ebubeagu, was established by the Ebonyi State Government as part of wider regional efforts to strengthen community policing and support law enforcement agencies in addressing security challenges, including violent crime and attacks by armed groups.
Security analysts note that operatives attached to local vigilante organisations often face significant risks while conducting patrols and responding to criminal activities, particularly in areas where armed attacks have become more frequent.
The latest incident is expected to renew calls for stronger security measures and improved protection for personnel involved in community policing initiatives.
Police authorities have appealed to members of the public to provide any credible information that could assist investigators in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the killing.
The Ebonyi State Police Command said investigations are ongoing and pledged to keep the public informed of any significant developments as efforts continue to bring the attackers to justice.
