Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has denied reports of a rift with Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting there was no serious disagreement between him and the national team’s captain despite growing controversy surrounding the forward’s absence from training.
Jesus addressed the situation on Wednesday ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark, following days of speculation about Ronaldo’s relationship with the new coach.
The controversy began after Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday.
The 41-year-old forward had warmed up during the match and appeared ready to enter the game, but Jesus ultimately decided against bringing him on.
Ronaldo’s failure to make an appearance attracted considerable attention, particularly because he remains Portugal’s captain and all-time leading scorer.
Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo was disappointed after spending a long period warming up without being introduced, but rejected suggestions that the incident had developed into a serious conflict.
“There was no incident whatsoever,” the Portugal coach said during his pre-match press conference.
The coach explained that he had already discussed Ronaldo’s workload with the veteran forward and that the decision over his involvement in the Norway match was part of a broader plan.
Jesus said Ronaldo understood that the coach had the final say on selection and playing time.
According to the Portugal boss, the plan had initially been for Ronaldo not to play against Norway or Denmark, although he kept open the possibility of using him if the circumstances of the match required it.
Ronaldo eventually remained on the bench for the entire game as Portugal secured another important victory.

Jesus, however, said Ronaldo had not refused to train.
He explained that the forward’s individual work was part of a routine physical programme and insisted there was nothing unusual about the arrangement.
“He didn’t refuse,” Jesus said, according to Reuters. “It’s the fourth day, so he’s going to train.”
The coach also rejected attempts to portray the situation as a major dressing-room dispute.
Jesus said Ronaldo had told him that he would accept whatever decision the coach made, whether that meant playing, remaining on the bench or being left out of the matchday squad.
The situation nevertheless attracted further attention after Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença travelled to Copenhagen.
Reports in Portugal indicated that Proença was expected to meet with both Jesus and Ronaldo as the federation sought to address the growing speculation surrounding the captain.
Ronaldo’s own comments from the previous week have also added context to the situation.
The Al-Nassr forward had said he could leave Portugal immediately if the coach or federation no longer wanted him.
He also made clear that his commitment to the national team remained strong and that he wanted to continue contributing to Portugal.
That makes the events surrounding the Norway match particularly significant.

Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo was not expected to start the match, with Gonçalo Ramos set to lead the attack if the coach’s plans remained unchanged.
The coach stressed that the same rules apply to every player and that selection decisions ultimately belong to him.

Reports indicated that he left the training venue after Jesus had earlier said he would participate in the session, although the Portuguese Football Federation did not provide a specific explanation for his absence.
Later on Wednesday, Ronaldo announced that he had decided to leave Portugal’s training camp following the national team’s coach’s press conference and a conversation with Proença.
The forward did not immediately reveal the precise reason for his departure, saying he would explain the circumstances to the Portuguese public at a later time.
He also wished Portugal and his teammates success.
That development means the situation has moved beyond the original question of whether Ronaldo was unhappy about being left on the bench.
Jesus has maintained that there was no rift and that Ronaldo had accepted the coaching decisions. Ronaldo’s subsequent departure from camp, meanwhile, has created fresh questions about what happened behind the scenes.
For now, neither the coach nor Ronaldo has publicly provided a complete account of the events that led to the veteran forward leaving the squad.
