Portugal are preparing a special farewell ceremony for Cristiano Ronaldo following the legendary forward’s decision to bring his remarkable international career to an end after more than two decades of representing his country.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has promised to honour the former captain for his extraordinary contribution to the national team, describing him as an inspiration, a symbol of dedication and one of the most important figures in the country’s football history.
In a heartfelt message shared on Thursday, November 5, the federation expressed its appreciation for Ronaldo’s commitment and achievements, assuring him that he would always have a place in Portuguese football.
The FPF also revealed plans to organise a special celebration in recognition of his service, giving supporters an opportunity to pay tribute to a player who has transformed the history of the national team.
Ronaldo’s international retirement marks the end of an extraordinary chapter that began in August 2003 when he made his senior debut against Kazakhstan at just 18 years old.
What followed was a career filled with remarkable records, historic achievements and unforgettable moments that established him as one of the greatest footballers to have represented Portugal.
The 41-year-old leaves the national team as the highest goalscorer in men’s international football history, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
Beyond his impressive scoring record, Ronaldo played a central role in changing Portugal’s fortunes on the international stage, leading the country to its first major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship.
Although he was forced off with an injury during the final against France, his leadership and encouragement from the touchline helped inspire his teammates to secure a memorable 1-0 victory after extra time.
He subsequently captained Portugal to victory in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and was also part of the squad that lifted the competition’s trophy again in 2025.
His international career also featured six FIFA World Cup appearances, making him one of the few players to participate in six editions of the tournament.
Ronaldo’s influence extended beyond goals and trophies. His consistency, professionalism and determination helped establish a new standard for Portuguese football, while his rivalry with Lionel Messi also defined an important era in the modern game.
His departure will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in the national team, particularly given his experience, leadership and ability to deliver in crucial moments.
However, his retirement from international football does not mean the end of his playing career. The forward is expected to continue representing Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he remains focused on extending his remarkable scoring record and pursuing the target of 1,000 official career goals.
For Portugal, the planned farewell will be an opportunity to celebrate more than two decades of service from a player whose achievements have become part of the country’s sporting identity.
While a new generation of Portuguese footballers prepares to take responsibility for the national team, Ronaldo’s legacy will remain difficult to match.
From his emotional debut as a teenager to becoming Portugal’s most decorated and recognisable football figure, his international journey has left an enduring mark on the history of the game.
