Prophet Emmanuel has sparked a conversation about marriage ceremonies after declaring that the traditional wedding, rather than the popular white wedding, is the main form of marriage recognised by the Bible.
Speaking in a recent message, the cleric argued that couples do not need to spend heavily on elaborate white weddings, particularly when the traditional marriage has already taken place.
“The main wedding recognised by the Bible is the traditional wedding, not the white wedding. Even the church will not wed you without the traditional wedding, so you don’t need to spend money on a white wedding or stress yourself wearing a white gown,” he said.
His comments have generated reactions online, with some people debating the place of traditional marriage and church weddings in contemporary Christian marriages.
In Nigeria, marriage ceremonies often involve multiple stages, including traditional rites between families and a church or civil ceremony, depending on the couple’s religious and legal preferences.
The prophet’s remarks have therefore reignited conversations about the financial pressure associated with elaborate wedding ceremonies and whether couples should prioritise the aspects of marriage they consider most meaningful.
His statement, however, represents his interpretation of marriage and biblical recognition rather than a universally accepted position across all Christian denominations.
