Real Madrid Fans Turn on Mbappé Despite Victory Over Oviedo as Pressure Mounts at Bernabéu

Sections of Real Madrid supporters expressed their frustration toward Kylian Mbappé on Thursday night after the French superstar was whistled during Los Blancos’ 2-0 La Liga victory over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Although Madrid secured all three points through goals from Gonzalo García and Jude Bellingham, the atmosphere inside the stadium revealed growing tension among supporters following what many consider a disappointing season for the Spanish giants.

Mbappé, who recently returned from injury, entered the match in the second half and was immediately greeted with whistles from parts of the home crowd. The reaction quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the evening, overshadowing the result itself and fueling fresh debate about the relationship between the player and sections of the Madrid fanbase.

The French forward arrived in Madrid amid enormous expectations after years of transfer speculation linking him with the club. His eventual move to the Spanish capital was viewed by many supporters as the beginning of a new dominant era for Real Madrid both domestically and in Europe.

Despite producing impressive individual statistics during his debut campaign, frustrations have continued to grow because the club failed to meet several major objectives this season. Real Madrid missed out on the La Liga title after rivals FC Barcelona sealed the championship, while disappointment in European competitions further intensified criticism around the squad.

For many Madrid supporters, the frustration appears to reflect the gap between expectations and reality. The arrival of Mbappé was expected to strengthen an already star packed squad that included Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and several other elite players. Instead, injuries, inconsistency and tactical struggles affected the team throughout the season.

Although Mbappé has continued to score goals consistently, some fans believe the collective performances of the team have not justified the excitement surrounding his arrival. Football analysts have suggested that the whistles directed at the France captain may represent broader dissatisfaction with the entire campaign rather than criticism of the player alone.

Spanish media reports in recent weeks also suggested that some supporters questioned Mbappé’s commitment during his recent injury absence. Discussions intensified online after reports claimed the forward travelled during part of his rehabilitation period, although no official wrongdoing was established.

Even so, the former Paris Saint Germain star remains one of the most productive players in European football this season. Mbappé recently secured the European Golden Shoe after finishing as one of the continent’s leading scorers and also broke several long standing club records during his first year at the Bernabéu.

His individual brilliance, however, has not been enough to shield him from the high expectations and intense scrutiny that come with representing Real Madrid.

The Santiago Bernabéu has historically been known for demanding excellence from players regardless of their reputation or achievements. Some of the biggest names in football history have previously faced criticism from Madrid supporters during difficult periods, including club legends who later became icons.

Observers believe the reaction toward Mbappé underlines the pressure associated with playing for one of the world’s most successful football institutions, where supporters expect trophies, dominant performances and consistent success every season.

Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa acknowledged after the game that supporters have every right to express disappointment following an underwhelming campaign. The coach insisted, however, that the players remain focused on rebuilding confidence and finishing the season strongly.

Arbeloa also defended the mentality and professionalism of his squad, emphasizing that injuries and difficult moments throughout the season affected the team’s rhythm and stability.

On the pitch, Madrid eventually controlled proceedings against Oviedo after a relatively cautious start. Young forward Gonzalo García opened the scoring with an impressive finish before England international Jude Bellingham added a second goal that secured victory for the hosts.

Bellingham once again emerged as one of Madrid’s standout performers, continuing a remarkable season that has strengthened his status as one of the club’s most influential players.

Despite the victory, much of the post match discussion centered on Mbappé and the growing pressure surrounding Real Madrid ahead of next season. Fans are increasingly demanding structural improvements, stronger performances and a clear return to the club’s traditional standards.

Football experts believe Madrid’s management will likely use the summer transfer window to strengthen several areas of the squad as they prepare for another intense domestic and European campaign.

For Mbappé, the challenge may now extend beyond scoring goals. The French superstar must also win over sections of the Bernabéu crowd by helping deliver major trophies and restoring confidence among supporters who expect nothing less than excellence from Real Madrid players.

While the whistles may represent a difficult moment in his Madrid journey, many still believe Mbappé remains central to the club’s long term ambitions and future success.
