Real Madrid have held positive discussions with Jude Bellingham over a possible contract extension, with reports in Spain indicating that the club wants to secure the England midfielder’s future beyond his existing agreement, which runs until June 2029.

The talks are part of Real Madrid’s efforts to retain their key players as they build a team capable of competing for domestic and European honours over the coming years. Spanish newspaper AS reported on October 16 that negotiations had progressed positively, with a proposed extension potentially keeping Bellingham at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2031.

Although several publications have subsequently reported that an agreement has been reached, Real Madrid have yet to announce a new contract officially. The reported terms, including the proposed duration and improved financial package, should therefore be distinguished from a formally confirmed renewal.

Bellingham joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023 in a transfer worth approximately €103 million. He signed a six-year contract that was scheduled to expire in June 2029, giving the Spanish giants several years of control over his future even before the latest discussions began.

The midfielder made an immediate impression in Spain, producing one of the most influential debut seasons of his career. He scored 19 goals and registered six assists in 28 La Liga appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, helping Madrid win the league title and the UEFA Champions League.

His ability to contribute goals from midfield, arrive in dangerous attacking positions and influence matches in different areas of the pitch quickly established him as one of the team’s most important players.

Bellingham’s output subsequently declined during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, with physical problems affecting his consistency. He recorded nine goals and eight assists in La Liga during the 2024/25 campaign, followed by six goals and four assists in the league in 2025/26.

Despite those interruptions, his overall contribution has continued to extend beyond scoring. His work rate, versatility and ability to operate between midfield and attack have made him an important option in different tactical systems.

The proposed extension would reportedly include improved financial terms reflecting his importance to the club. However, the precise salary, bonuses and other contractual conditions have not been officially disclosed.

Madrid’s interest in securing Bellingham’s future also comes during a period of transition within the squad. Long-serving figures such as Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos have left the club, while Dani Carvajal’s departure has further reduced the number of established veterans around whom the team was previously built.

Bellingham is among the players expected to shoulder greater responsibility as the club develops its next generation of leaders. At 23, he combines considerable experience in major competitions with several years ahead of him at the highest level.

His role under manager José Mourinho has also contributed to his importance. Reports indicate that the midfielder has been given greater freedom to operate behind forward Kylian Mbappé, allowing him to contribute to attacking moves while retaining his defensive responsibilities.

The arrangement offers Madrid another way to maximise Bellingham’s ability to influence matches without restricting him to a conventional central midfield role. His pressing, movement and capacity to carry the ball forward can help connect the team’s midfield and attack.

Bellingham’s performances for England have further strengthened his reputation. His contribution at international level has reinforced his position among the leading players of his generation and added to the reasons Madrid would want to maintain a long-term commitment to him.

From the club’s perspective, negotiating an extension well before the current contract expires would provide greater certainty in planning future seasons. It would also reduce the likelihood of entering a later transfer window with questions about the midfielder’s long-term future dominating discussions around the squad.

However, an extension would not necessarily signal an immediate change in his responsibilities or position within the team. Its primary significance would be to establish a longer contractual commitment between the player and the club.

For Bellingham, remaining at Madrid would provide continuity at a club where he has already won major honours and established himself as a central figure. A new agreement would also potentially reward his contribution with improved financial terms.

For now, the reported progress in negotiations suggests that both sides are interested in continuing their relationship. Nevertheless, until Real Madrid issue an official announcement or the contractual arrangements are otherwise formally confirmed, the reported extension to 2031 should not be presented as an officially completed renewal.

The coming weeks should provide a clearer indication of when the club intends to formalise the agreement, with Bellingham’s long-term future remaining an important part of Madrid’s planning.
