The House of Representatives has extended the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The extension followed an executive request submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu, seeking additional time for ministries, departments and agencies to complete critical infrastructure projects and other capital expenditures captured under the 2025 budget.
The approval was granted during Tuesday’s plenary, following a motion moved by Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader.
Ihonvbere said the capital component of the 2025 budget has not been fully implemented due to economic difficulties.
Lawmakers subsequently fast-tracked the bill’s consideration, advancing it from first to third reading.
This is the fourth time the national assembly has moved the deadline for implementing the 2025 capital budget.
On December 23, 2025, lawmakers approved a three-month extension of the capital budget, pushing the deadline to March 31, 2026, after repealing and re-enacting the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts.
On March 31, the senate and house of representatives again extended the implementation deadline from March 31 to June 30.
On June 15, the national assembly extended the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
At the time, Opeyemi Bamidele, senate leader, said the execution of capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act had not reached an optimal level.
