Armed robbers have reportedly attacked Point-of-Sale operators at Aroma Junction in Awka, Anambra State, with CCTV footage circulating online appearing to capture the incident.
The reported robbery took place on October 4 in the busy commercial area, with the suspects allegedly targeting POS operators and taking money before escaping from the scene on a tricycle, popularly known as a keke.
Footage shared online shows what appears to be a group of individuals moving around the POS stands as traffic and other members of the public remained nearby.
The incident has attracted concern among residents and social media users, particularly because it reportedly happened during the day in a busy area where people were going about their normal activities.
The CCTV footage has since circulated widely online, prompting reactions over the safety of traders and small business operators who handle cash daily at busy commercial locations.
POS operators have become increasingly important to everyday financial transactions in Nigeria, particularly in areas where residents rely on agents for cash withdrawals, transfers and other banking services.
The reported attack has therefore raised concerns about the vulnerability of such operators, who often conduct business in open spaces and may have cash on hand.
Some social media users have also drawn comparisons with historical comments about security in Anambra State. In 2014, then-Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar was reported to have described Anambra as Nigeria’s safest state and credited the administration of former Governor Peter Obi with security improvements.
The comparison has resurfaced online following the latest incident, with residents using the reported robbery to call for renewed attention to security in commercial areas.
Anambra is currently governed by Governor Charles Soludo, whose administration has faced calls from residents and other stakeholders to strengthen security measures across the state.
However, details surrounding the Aroma Junction incident, including the exact amount of money reportedly stolen, the identities of the suspects and whether any arrests have been made, have not been independently established from the information currently circulating online.
Authorities have yet to provide a full official account of the reported robbery at the time of this report.
The incident has nevertheless renewed concerns about the safety of traders and POS operators working in busy commercial hubs, where attacks during daylight hours can affect both businesses and public confidence.
