Cristiano Ronaldo moved another step closer to the remarkable 1,000-goal milestone after scoring a hat-trick to inspire Al-Nassr to a thrilling 5-3 victory over Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League on Thursday.
The Portuguese superstar scored three times in the second half at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, taking his career tally to 985 goals and leaving him just 15 short of the landmark he has been pursuing.
However, the victory was far from straightforward for Al-Nassr, who had to recover from an early setback before surviving a determined challenge from their visitors in an eight-goal encounter.
Ronaldo thought he had given the hosts an early lead in the 10th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside, denying the forward an opportunity to make an immediate impact.
Al-Kholood capitalised on their reprieve six minutes later when Julien Domingues opened the scoring in the 16th minute.
The French forward found space between Al-Nassr’s central defenders to meet Abdulrahman Al-Dawsari’s cross before bringing the ball under control and finishing past goalkeeper Bento to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The goal exposed defensive weaknesses in the home side’s back line and gave Al-Kholood encouragement that they could frustrate the title contenders.
Al-Nassr responded by increasing their attacking pressure, with João Félix emerging as the creative force behind their recovery.
The Portuguese playmaker supplied the equaliser in the 24th minute, finding Brazilian midfielder Ângelo Gabriel in space around the edge of the penalty area.
Ângelo took advantage of the opportunity by driving a low finish into the corner, restoring parity at 1-1 and giving the hosts the momentum they needed.
Al-Nassr continued to push forward, and their persistence paid off again in the 38th minute when Sadio Mané put them ahead.
Félix provided his second assist of the evening, laying the ball into Mané’s path near the six-yard area. The Senegalese forward finished with his right foot to complete the turnaround and send the home supporters into celebration.
With the hosts seemingly in control, Al-Kholood refused to surrender.
The visitors found another breakthrough in first-half stoppage time, with Antoine Loïc Essomba scoring in the 45+2nd minute to make it 2-2.
Domingues turned provider this time, setting up Essomba to finish with his right foot and punish Al-Nassr for failing to protect their advantage.
The equaliser ensured that the teams went into the interval level after an entertaining first half in which Al-Nassr had been forced to overcome an early deficit and Ronaldo had already seen an effort ruled out.
The Portuguese captain also had another goal disallowed before the break, adding to his frustration and leaving him still searching for a valid entry on the scoresheet.
But Ronaldo returned for the second half determined to change the outcome, and Al-Kholood soon discovered that containing him for another 45 minutes would be a considerably more difficult task.
The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute when Ronaldo restored Al-Nassr’s lead.
Félix delivered another decisive contribution, threading a pass into the penalty area for his compatriot, who timed his movement perfectly before finishing from close range.
The goal made it 3-2 and took Ronaldo to 983 career goals, leaving him 17 short of 1,000.
Al-Kholood had little time to recover before the five-time Ballon d’Or winner struck again.
Six minutes later, in the 72nd minute, Ronaldo doubled his tally with a powerful header following another excellent delivery from Félix.
The Portuguese forward rose inside the penalty area and directed his effort beyond the goalkeeper, extending Al-Nassr’s advantage to 4-2.
It was another example of Ronaldo’s aerial ability and movement in the box, while Félix continued to torment the visitors’ defence with his creativity.
The goal also took Ronaldo to 984 career strikes, bringing the long-awaited milestone within 16 goals.
Al-Nassr were now firmly in control, but the hosts were not finished.
Ronaldo completed his hat-trick in the 81st minute to put the result beyond Al-Kholood’s immediate reach.
Mané supplied the decisive pass, finding Ronaldo inside the penalty area after the Senegalese forward had kept the attacking move alive. Ronaldo arrived in the right position and finished clinically to make it 5-2.
The strike was his third of the evening and his 985th career goal, leaving him just 15 away from reaching 1,000.
It also completed a remarkable 15-minute scoring burst in which the Portuguese forward transformed a closely contested match into a comfortable-looking Al-Nassr advantage.
Félix’s four assists underlined his importance to the victory, with the playmaker setting up Ângelo, Mané and Ronaldo’s first two goals before Mané helped create Ronaldo’s third.
Despite the three-goal deficit, Al-Kholood continued to search for a consolation goal and eventually found one deep into stoppage time.
In the 90+4th minute, the visitors were awarded a penalty after a foul in the area, giving Domingues the opportunity to complete his brace.
The forward converted from the spot, reducing the deficit to 5-3, but the late goal came too late to threaten Al-Nassr’s victory.
The final whistle confirmed three important points for Al-Nassr after a match that demanded both attacking quality and resilience.
Ronaldo understandably dominated the headlines, but Félix’s four assists and the contributions of Ângelo and Mané were equally important in a game that produced eight goals.
The result lifted Al-Nassr to 28 points after 11 matches, keeping them firmly involved in the Saudi Pro League title race. Al-Kholood, meanwhile, remained on 12 points after another difficult outing.
For Ronaldo, however, the most significant outcome was the latest addition to his extraordinary career tally.
At 41, the Portuguese forward continues to find ways to influence matches, whether through his movement inside the penalty area, his finishing ability or his aerial threat.
His hat-trick against Al-Kholood took him to 985 career goals, leaving 15 more to reach the 1,000-goal mark.
With every goal bringing him closer to that historic achievement, the countdown continues.
