At least nine people have been killed and 28 others injured after Russia launched overnight missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, causing widespread destruction to residential buildings and triggering multiple fires across the city.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said the attacks affected five districts of the capital, with four children among those injured.
More than 100 residents were rescued from damaged buildings as emergency workers battled fires and searched for survivors.
As the attack unfolded, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in bomb shelters.
“Explosions have been heard across the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack.
Stay in shelters,” Klitschko said in a message posted on Telegram.
Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed carrying out what it described as a “massive strike” in the Kyiv region, claiming it targeted military-industrial facilities and logistics centres.
Local authorities said seven people were killed and 14 others injured in the Darnytsky district, while two people lost their lives and eight others were wounded in the Solomiansky district after a five-storey residential building was hit.
The latest bombardment comes as Russia and Ukraine continue to intensify cross-border attacks following months of escalating long-range strikes.
According to the United Nations, June 2026 was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022.
Ukraine has again appealed to its international allies for additional air defence systems.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the latest attacks underscore the urgent need for stronger air defence capabilities.
“It is the battle for the skies that will define the trajectory of this war.
The stronger the air shield over Ukraine, the closer peace becomes,” Sybiha said.
Meanwhile, Russia claimed its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 274 Ukrainian drones overnight.
The renewed exchange of attacks comes shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with US President Donald Trump.
Zelensky said the discussions included possible US support for the production of Patriot missile systems in Ukraine, although Trump later said Washington would have to be “very careful” before approving such a move.
