Senate establishes Ad-Hoc committee to probe alleged illegal annexation of Nigerian maritime territories by Cameroon

Responding decisively to territorial concerns, the Nigerian Senate has formed an ad-hoc committee to investigate Cameroon’s alleged illegal annexation of maritime territories and mangrove islands.

Consequently, this action highlights their commitment to protecting sovereignty and ensuring transparent border management.

Moreover, recent reports reveal encroachments threatening Nigeria’s maritime domain, endangering economic and geopolitical interests.

These contested areas, rich in marine resources and biodiversity, sustain local livelihoods and national economic stability.

Following urgent deliberations, lawmakers established the committee, alarmed by potential territorial losses.

Tasked with determining annexation scope and border management failures, it will assess risks to Nigeria’s territorial integrity comprehensively.

In a statement, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“It is imperative that we act swiftly and decisively to address these allegations.

He emphasized, ‘Our maritime territories are not mere lines on a map. Moreover, they embody vital resources and heritage we must safeguard for future generations.

The ad-hoc committee will collaborate with relevant government agencies, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Boundary Commission, to gather comprehensive data on the issue.

It is also expected to engage with local stakeholders and international organizations to ensure a balanced and informed investigation.

Experts have highlighted the strategic importance of Nigeria’s maritime territories, which encompass vital shipping routes, fisheries, and oil reserves.

Any encroachment on these areas could undermine national security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, mangrove islands play a crucial role in mitigating climate change impacts, serving as natural barriers against coastal erosion and providing habitats for diverse marine species.

The Senate’s initiative has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, who view it as a proactive step toward resolving a potentially contentious issue.

However, some have called for greater regional cooperation to address border disputes and prevent future conflicts. Analysts have suggested that diplomatic engagement with Cameroon will be key to finding a peaceful resolution to the allegations.

Currently, African nations prioritize regional integration and collaboration through frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Experts argue resolving border disputes peacefully will build trust and boost economic growth continent-wide.

Now, as the committee starts its work, observers await its ability to uncover facts and propose actionable solutions. The outcome will shape Nigeria’s maritime policies and set precedents for future border disputes.

By taking this proactive stance, Nigeria signals its commitment to defending sovereignty while fostering peace and cooperation with neighbors. This investigation could redefine diplomatic strategies across the continent.
