Sen. Stella Oduah (PDP-Anambra North) has called the Federal Government to provide housing facilities in rural areas across the country, reports News Agency of Nigeria [NAN].

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Cynthia Ferdinand, Press Secretary to Oduah, said she made the call at a meeting with Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

Oduah, a member of the Senate Committee on Banking and other Financial Institutions, said such facilities will speed up development of the rural areas and satellite towns.

She said the housing deficit in urban centres will reduce as more people will be comfortable in the rural areas.

She, therefore, charged the FMBN to also consider development of facilities in rural areas to encourage housing development.

“I have not seen your projections for rural housing development; the impact of the FMBN has not been felt, neither have I noticed its activities in the past”, Oduah said.

She requested for the bank’s 2016 projections for rural areas development especially in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s rural plans.

“I also want to know if the growth rate of the cooperation is enough to serve as a catalyst for mortgage improvement.

“I am convinced that this will be a catalyst for economic growth such that will create a high value, fill in existing gaps in our housing needs and increase job creation from estate developers”, she said.

Mr Danbala Danju, Managing Director, FMBN said they were very optimistic to complete a number of houses in many states of the federation.

He said there would be improvements in the mortgage sector, adding that a lot of the houses to be completed will benefit the rural areas.
