South African Man Laments Widespread Shop Closures, Sparks Debate on Ownership

A man in South Africa has expressed concern after noticing that many shops across different areas were shut down, linking the closures to the role of foreign ownership in local businesses.

In a video circulating online, he claimed that a significant number of small retail shops are owned by African immigrants, arguing that their absence has led to widespread shutdowns.

“No shop is operating today. South Africans tell African immigrants that they don’t own anything in our country, but the shops are closed. This is very sad. The shops are closed everywhere because most shops aren’t owned by South Africans,” he said.

His remarks have since triggered conversations online, with many weighing in on the economic role of immigrants, local participation in business, and the broader social tensions tied to ownership and employment.

While some agree that foreign nationals play a major role in the informal retail sector, others caution against generalizations, emphasizing the need for unity and inclusive economic policies.
