Sudan on brink of collapse – UNICEF

The humanitarian situation in Sudan has reached catastrophic levels, with UNICEF Representative Sheldon Yett declaring a “child protection emergency” in the country.
The warning comes as the Famine Review Committee (FRC) declares a famine in Camp Zamzam in northern Darfur, a move described by Yett as “extremely alarming.”
In an exclusive interview with UN News from Port Sudan, Yett painted a dire picture of the situation on the ground, where children are desperate and inhabitants are struggling to survive.
He emphasized that the famine declaration is not an isolated incident, but rather a symptom of a larger crisis that threatens the very future of Sudan.
“The war is ongoing, and access constraints are making it extremely difficult to deliver aid,” Yett said. “We’re working every possible angle, but unless we have peace, ceasefires, and agreements for safe access, I expect the situation to get worse.”
The UNICEF official highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict on children, with over 18 million out of school and vulnerable to exploitation.
He emphasized the importance of education in providing a sense of normalcy and stability for children, and UNICEF’s efforts to ensure communities have access to education.
As the rainy season approaches, Yett warned of an increased risk of cholera and malaria, with UNICEF working to provide vaccination campaigns and support to the government.
He also expressed concern about the rise in grave child rights violations, including child labor and early marriage.
The situation in Sudan is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict and the importance of urgent action to protect vulnerable populations. As Yett emphasized, “the future of Sudan depends on a ceasefire.”
