Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has provided clarity on why Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen was not included in the squad for the Unity Cup and the upcoming friendly match against Russia on June 6, 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Osimhen, who is Nigeria’s first-choice striker, has scored an impressive 26 goals in 41 international appearances.

Despite his strong record and popularity among fans, he was notably absent from the recent call-up.

The 26-year-old forward has had a remarkable loan spell with Turkish club Galatasaray this season, where he displayed excellent form and resilience.

However, the Turkish football season was still ongoing during the Unity Cup, which created uncertainties about his availability for the national team during that period.

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, coach Chelle revealed that Osimhen was not invited because he is currently dealing with a complicated transfer situation. According to Chelle, this uncertainty affects Osimhen’s focus and readiness to commit fully to the team.

“Victor (Osimhen) is, for me, the best striker in the world,” Chelle said.

He added, “It is difficult for him to come for this game because he played a season with a lot of pressure.

The reality is, there is a transfer window. During this time, a player like him is not focused at 100%.”

Chelle’s remarks underline the importance of mental and physical preparedness for international duty, especially for a player in the midst of career negotiations.

Many Nigerian football fans had hoped to see Osimhen take part in the friendly against Russia, given his proven goal-scoring ability and importance to the team’s attacking strength.

However, the coach’s decision to excuse him is a strategic move to allow Osimhen the time and space needed to finalize his future club commitments and to avoid any unnecessary distractions.

The Super Eagles will now look to other talented forwards to step up and fill the gap as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
