Suspected IPOB sponsor died of Illness, not torture — Police

The Imo State Police Command has categorically denied allegations that its Anti-Kidnapping Unit (Tiger Base) tortured Magnus Ejiogu, a suspected major sponsor and financier of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), to death.

According to the police, Ejiogu, also known as Emu, died from a sudden illness while in custody, and his death is currently under investigation.

The police claim Ejiogu suddenly took ill on October 23, 2025, while awaiting arraignment, and despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead.

Ejiogu was rushed to the Police Clinic in Amakohia, Owerri, and later referred to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Owerri, for advanced medical care.

The police have deposited Ejiogu’s body in the hospital mortuary for a full autopsy to determine the definitive medical cause of death.

However, the police vehemently denied allegations of torture or maltreatment, stating that all actions taken during Ejiogu’s custody adhered to professional policing ethics and due process.

Ejiogu was linked to multiple deadly attacks, including the 2022 assassination of Eze Ignatius Asor, the traditional ruler of Abudi Agwa in Oguta LGA, and the attack on Agwa Police Station, which resulted in the deaths of five police officers, including a pregnant policewoman.

The police had concluded investigations into his case and approved his prosecution before his death.
