Nigerian singer Tekno has shared his thoughts on the growing emphasis on intellectualism, arguing that people can also be entertained by simplicity, humour and outright goofiness.

The singer was reacting to the phrase “Olodo Uprising” when he questioned whether intelligence and intellectualism were still enough to capture people’s attention.

“Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect? I can watch Carter Efe for hours and just be laughing at him just being goofy because that’s interesting,” Tekno said.

He went on to draw a comparison with some of the most memorable comic characters from older Nollywood movies, pointing out that audiences were entertained by actors such as Osuofia and Mr. Ibu because of their deliberately foolish and humorous behaviour.

“Back in the day wey you dey watch Osuofia and Mr. Ibu, wetin make you been like them? No be the mumu wey dem dey mumu?” he added.

Tekno’s comments have sparked conversations about the changing nature of entertainment and what audiences find engaging in the age of social media.

His argument suggests that entertainment does not always have to be intellectual or sophisticated to connect with an audience, as humour, spontaneity and relatable foolishness can also keep people watching.

The singer’s remarks have since generated reactions from social media users, with some agreeing that simple comedy can sometimes be more entertaining than content that requires deep thought.
