At least three people were killed after a vehicle collided with an elephant inside a national park in Uganda, police confirmed on Monday.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening in Murchison Falls National Park, located in the northwestern part of the country.
According to police, the minibus was travelling from Arua city to Kampala when it struck an elephant crossing the road and subsequently lost control.
“Three occupants died on the spot while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” police said in a statement shared on X.
Authorities did not disclose the condition of the elephant following the collision.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority also confirmed the incident and urged motorists driving through protected wildlife areas to exercise caution.
“Motorists travelling through Protected Areas are strongly advised to drive cautiously, as wild animals frequently cross the roads,” the agency warned.
Human-wildlife conflicts have become increasingly common in recent years as growing human populations continue to expand into areas surrounding wildlife reserves and national parks.
In 2024, the Uganda Wildlife Authority estimated that about three animals were killed daily by speeding vehicles within Murchison Falls National Park.
Road accidents remain a major concern in Uganda, where traffic crashes frequently claim lives across the country.
