YOLA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved contracts worth ₦156 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of key federal roads in Adamawa State, a move aimed at improving transportation infrastructure, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic development in the North-East.
The approval covers both newly awarded and re-awarded road contracts, including the strategic Jimeta–Mayo-Belwa Road and the Yola–Hong–Mubi Road, according to the Federal Controller of Works in Adamawa State. The projects are expected to improve the movement of people, agricultural produce and commercial goods across the state while strengthening links with neighbouring communities.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Works explained that the road projects form part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to rehabilitating critical transport infrastructure across the country. They noted that the selected roads have long served as major economic corridors but have suffered significant deterioration over the years, affecting transportation, commerce and access to essential services.
The Jimeta–Mayo-Belwa Road is regarded as an important route connecting several agricultural communities to urban markets, while the Yola–Hong–Mubi Road provides a vital link to commercial centres in northern Adamawa and neighbouring states. Authorities believe upgrading the roads will reduce travel time, improve road safety and stimulate economic activities by facilitating easier movement of goods and services.
The Federal Controller of Works stated that the projects would be executed in accordance with approved engineering standards to ensure durability and long-term value. He explained that the re-awarded contracts followed government efforts to ensure timely project delivery and improve the quality of infrastructure development across the country.
Government officials also expressed confidence that the projects would generate employment opportunities during the construction phase through the engagement of engineers, technicians, artisans and other skilled and unskilled workers. They noted that improved road infrastructure would further encourage private sector investment by enhancing access to markets and reducing transportation costs for businesses operating in the region.
Economic analysts have consistently identified road infrastructure as a key driver of development, particularly in states with strong agricultural potential such as Adamawa.
