Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has come under criticism on social media following her comments regarding the recent kidnapping incident involving school children and teachers in Oyo State.
Weeks ago, the nation was thrown into distress after reports emerged that several schoolchildren were abducted from their school. During the incident, a teacher was also reportedly killed, with footage of the attack later circulating online and intensifying public concern.
Reacting to the development nearly two weeks later, Tiwa Savage stated that she only became aware of the incident after seeing a social media post by fellow singer Spyro, who had highlighted insecurity in the state.
According to her, the post prompted her to reach out to individuals in order to better understand the situation, as she had not initially been fully aware of the details. She further noted that she later came across a post by media personality KieKie indicating that the incident had occurred days earlier.
Her comments, however, sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many users criticising her delayed response to the tragedy. Some accused the singer of being disconnected from pressing national issues, while others questioned why she addressed the matter long after it had occurred.
Additional reactions online also included allegations of political bias, with some users suggesting her response was influenced by concerns over public perception. Others expressed disappointment, describing her remarks as inadequate given the severity of the incident.
The controversy has since generated broader conversations around celebrity responsibility and public awareness in times of national crisis.
