Top 6 Countries Granting Nigerians Automatic Citizenship at Birth

Published

on

As the United States tightens its immigration policies, many Nigerians seeking birthright citizenship options for their children are now turning elsewhere.

On Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria issued a strong warning against “birth tourism,” stating that visa applications will be denied if the applicant’s primary intent is to give birth in the U.S.

The statement, posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle @USinNigeria, read:

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted.

Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”

The post included the hashtags #VisaWiseTravelSmart and #USVisa.

Therefore, with U.S. restrictions in place, here are six countries that still grant automatic citizenship by birth to Nigerians and other foreigners in 2025:

1. Canada

To begin with, Canada offers unconditional birthright citizenship. Any child born on Canadian soil becomes a citizen automatically.

However, foreign parents must apply separately for residency or citizenship through immigration pathways like family sponsorship.

Moreover, Canada also boasts one of the world’s strongest passports, ranking in the global top 10.

2. Mexico

Similarly, Mexico practices full jus soli (right of the soil). Any child born in Mexico becomes a citizen, except children of foreign diplomats. This policy, notably, remains unchanged in 2025.

3. Brazil

In Brazil, all children born in the country are constitutionally guaranteed citizenship.

Additionally, parents may apply for residency and can pursue naturalization after just one year.

4. Argentina

Likewise, Argentina provides automatic citizenship to any child born within its borders.

Furthermore, foreign parents can apply for their own citizenship after living in Argentina for only one year, making it one of the easiest countries for full family integration.

5. Peru

Peru also allows unrestricted citizenship by birth. Children born there are citizens regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

Later on, parents may apply for residency and naturalization.

6. Costa Rica

Finally, Costa Rica grants automatic birthright citizenship. Parents can seek residency after three years and apply for full citizenship after a total of ten years.

Though the process is longer, the country still remains an attractive destination due to its peaceful environment and stable legal system.

As more countries close their doors to birthright travel, these six continue to offer welcoming pathways to citizenship for Nigerian families.
