Bridge collapse in India claims 10 lives

At least ten people have tragically lost their lives following the sudden collapse of a portion of the Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River in Gujarat’s Vadodara district, India.

The incident occurred on the morning of July 9, 2025, when several vehicles, including trucks, a pickup van, an SUV, and an auto-rickshaw, plunged into the swollen river below as the bridge gave way without warning during peak traffic hours.

The Gambhira Bridge, constructed in 1985, is a vital infrastructure link connecting the districts of Vadodara and Anand.

It facilitates transportation between central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region.

Spanning approximately 900 meters with 23 piers, the bridge had been subject to periodic maintenance, according to Gujarat’s Health Minister Rushikesh Patel.

Despite this, the sudden failure of an entire slab between two piers has raised serious concerns about the structural integrity and oversight of aging infrastructure in the region.

At the time of the collapse, multiple vehicles were on the bridge.

Reports confirm that two trucks, a Bolero SUV, a pickup van, and an auto-rickshaw fell into the river.

Another truck was left precariously hanging from the broken edge of the bridge.

Rescue teams, including local police, fire brigade, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and volunteers, swiftly responded to the scene.

They have been engaged in ongoing search and rescue operations, deploying cranes and divers to recover submerged vehicles and locate missing persons.

So far, at least nine bodies have been recovered, and five others injured have been rescued and hospitalized.

The Vadodara district has experienced heavy monsoon rains in recent days, which may have contributed to the bridge’s collapse.

Locals have long expressed concerns about the bridge’s condition, with some alleging that it was in a dilapidated state and that their requests for significant repairs had gone unheeded.

The bridge is also known locally as a “suicide point,” adding a tragic dimension to its history.

However, officials, including Vadodara R&B Executive Engineer N. M. Nayakawala, have stated that the bridge was not in a dilapidated condition and that it had a designed lifespan of 100 years.

The incident has sparked an immediate response from the state government.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a thorough technical inquiry into the cause of the collapse and dispatched a team of experts to investigate.

The Chief Minister has also promised strict action should negligence be found.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the accident as “deeply saddening”.

This disaster underscores ongoing challenges in India’s infrastructure safety.

The country has faced repeated incidents of structural failures.

These are often linked to aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and the pressures of increasing traffic and extreme weather conditions.

A particularly devastating example occurred in 2022 when a century-old colonial-era cable suspension bridge collapsed into the Machchu River in Gujarat.

The collapse killed at least 132 people after hundreds fell into the water.

The Gambhira Bridge collapse not only resulted in tragic loss of life but also disrupted connectivity between key regions of Gujarat.

The bridge’s failure has forced authorities to advise travelers to use alternate routes between Anand and Vadodara, impacting daily commuters and transport logistics.

Survivors of the collapse have recounted harrowing experiences of being trapped underwater and struggling to escape their vehicles as the river’s current swept them away.

Emergency responders have faced challenges due to the monsoon-swollen river and the risk of further structural failures during rescue operations.

This incident highlights the critical need for enhanced infrastructure monitoring, timely maintenance, and investment in modernization to prevent such catastrophic failures.

It also calls attention to the importance of disaster preparedness and rapid response capabilities in mitigating the human toll of infrastructure collapses.

In summary, the collapse of the four-decade-old Gambhira Bridge in Gujarat is a tragic reminder of the vulnerabilities in aging infrastructure.

This comes amid growing environmental and traffic stresses.

The loss of at least nine lives, the injuries sustained by others, and the disruption caused to regional connectivity have prompted urgent calls for accountability and reforms aimed at ensuring the safety and resilience of India’s vital transport networks.
