United States President Donald Trump has called on countries to impose total economic isolation on Iran, demanding that Tehran stop attacks on commercial shipping, abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for what he described as terrorism.
Trump made the call on Tuesday while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The US president also sought to dismiss concerns over American ammunition supplies, saying the United States has enough weapons and missile stockpiles while rapidly expanding production.
“The cowards and traitors would love to say the United States is low on munitions, but that’s not true,” Trump said.
He added that the US has more ammunition than it could possibly use and is replenishing its stockpiles at an unprecedented pace.
Trump said 18 major ammunition plants are currently under construction, which he said would significantly increase the production of missiles and other weapons.
According to the president, the expanded production capacity would also allow the United States to supply its allies more quickly.
Turning to Iran, Trump urged countries around the world to join Washington in imposing economic pressure on Tehran.
“I call on all nations to join us in enforcing the complete economic isolation of Iran until they stop their attacks on commercial shipping, relinquish their nuclear ambitions, and cease their support of terror,” he said.
Trump described the Iranian government as a “terrorist regime” and attributed its actions to what he characterised as weakness and desperation.
He said a united international response could bring an end to what he called the 51-year menace of Iranian terror.
Trump also linked the conflict to global oil prices, saying prices could fall further if the situation changes.
“With courage and resolve, anything is possible. Big changes can happen, and happen fast,” he said.
