The United States has begun deporting Nigerian nationals under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) Eighty-five individuals are set to arrive in Lagos, while 116 remain in detention awaiting further immigration decisions.

According to DDM Newspaper, the Nigerian government has expressed concerns about the deportation process.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, called for a humane and dignified approach to repatriation.

In a statement issued by her media aide, Magnus Eze, she emphasized the need to follow international deportation guidelines.

She disclosed that approximately 201 Nigerians are currently held in U.S. immigration detention facilities.

Out of this number, 85 individuals have been cleared for immediate deportation.

She stressed the importance of treating deportees with dignity and ensuring adherence to international standards.

U.S. authorities confirmed that all deportees will be flown directly to Lagos.

No alternative destinations such as Port Harcourt or Abuja have been considered for repatriation.

An official stated that the first group consists of individuals convicted of crimes and those with immigration violations.

“These individuals have exhausted all legal appeals and remained in the U.S. illegally,” the official added.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu raised concerns about the emotional and economic impact of sudden deportations.

She urged the U.S. government to allow deportees time to prepare before repatriation.

“We appeal for a dignified return process,” she stated.

“This is important for those who have not committed violent crimes,” she added.

Many deportees support families in Nigeria, paying school fees and providing financial assistance.

Sudden deportations will cause hardship for them and their dependents, she warned.

Trump’s administration has intensified immigration crackdowns since he assumed office as the 47th president.

He has signed several executive orders targeting undocumented immigrants.

These include policies to revoke birthright citizenship and increase border security measures.

Trump also plans to deport millions of undocumented individuals living in the U.S.

His administration defends the policies as necessary for national security and legal enforcement.

Critics argue that the policies are excessively harsh on long-term residents without criminal records.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that Nigeria respects U.S. immigration laws but urges fairness in implementation.

“We acknowledge every nation’s right to enforce immigration laws,” she said.

“However, the Trump administration should ensure a compassionate approach,” she added.

Deportees should have adequate time to manage their affairs before returning home, she emphasized.

A structured deportation process will reduce hardship for families and communities.

Despite concerns, Trump’s policies remain firm, with immigration agencies continuing operations.

More Nigerians may face deportation in the coming months.

Families of detained Nigerians have expressed distress over the situation.

They urge the Nigerian government to negotiate better treatment for affected citizens.

As the Trump administration continues its crackdown, uncertainty grows for detained Nigerians.

Eighty-five are scheduled for deportation, while 116 await their fate.

The Nigerian government remains engaged in diplomatic discussions to ensure fair treatment.
