United States President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey, the White House has confirmed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s appearance would mark his first attendance at the tournament and described the competition as the “most watched, most secure and most successful World Cup in American history.”
Trump is also expected to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York on Friday.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier indicated that Trump would be present at the final and would present the trophy to the winning team.
The US president has not attended any World Cup matches so far, although he has remained involved in discussions surrounding the tournament. He has repeatedly claimed credit for helping secure the United States’ successful bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
His expected role in presenting the trophy comes after controversy during last year’s Club World Cup final, when he remained on stage during Chelsea’s trophy celebrations after handing the title to captain Reece James.
