ABUJA, Nigeria — The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that it has not upheld the democratic principles associated with Nigeria’s June 12 struggle.

In a Democracy Day statement released on Friday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the lessons of June 12 remain “painfully unlearnt” under the current government, arguing that the ideals of democracy are not being fully reflected in governance practices.

The statement maintained that Democracy Day should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, stressing that citizens continue to expect improved governance, stronger institutions, and greater accountability from political leaders.

The faction accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of falling short of expectations in upholding democratic values, although it did not provide specific policy examples in the statement referenced.

It argued that the spirit of June 12 was rooted in justice, transparency, and respect for the will of the people, adding that these principles must be evident in the conduct of government and democratic institutions.

The group further called for renewed commitment to democratic reforms, insisting that Nigeria’s political system must better reflect the aspirations of citizens through credible elections, rule of law, and improved governance outcomes.

It also urged political leaders across all levels to prioritise national unity and public welfare over partisan interests, noting that democracy can only thrive when citizens feel a tangible improvement in their quality of life.

The faction concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain engaged in the democratic process and to continue demanding accountability from those in power, especially as the country looks ahead to future elections.
