Nigerian heritage and American identity came together in a remarkable way in Madrid as 19-year-old Ugo Ugochukwu secured his place in motorsport history by becoming the first driver from the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship.
Ugochukwu sealed the title at the season finale after finishing second in the Feature Race at the new Madring circuit in Spain. While the race victory went to Finland’s Tuukka Taponen, it was Ugochukwu who had the biggest reason to celebrate after crossing the finish line.
The result completed a remarkable rise for the young driver, who entered the final weekend locked in a tense championship battle with Britain’s Freddie Slater. Ugochukwu ultimately finished the season 14 points ahead of his closest rival, turning a season of pressure and consistency into the biggest achievement of his young career.
But behind the American flag attached to his name is a strong Nigerian connection that Ugochukwu has never hidden.
Born in New York City on April 23, 2007, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian international fashion model Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi. His mother is one of Nigeria’s most recognised models and has enjoyed an international career, while his father comes from Italy.
That combination has given Ugochukwu a multicultural background, but his Nigerian roots remain an important part of his identity.
His surname itself carries a strong Nigerian connection, and his mother’s influence has ensured that the young racer has remained connected to his heritage despite growing up in the United States.

He entered the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2025 with PREMA Racing, but his first season was far from perfect. He finished 16th in the championship with 43 points and did not record a victory. Rather than allowing a difficult debut season to derail his ambitions, he returned in 2026 with Campos Racing determined to challenge for the title.
The transformation was striking.
Ugochukwu became a consistent front runner throughout the campaign and produced the results required to remain in contention for the championship. His ability to stay competitive across different circuits eventually gave him the opportunity to fight for the title until the final weekend.
Madrid provided the perfect ending.
Entering the decisive Feature Race, Ugochukwu knew that the championship was still within reach. He kept his focus, avoided unnecessary risks and finished second behind Taponen. Slater could only manage eighth, meaning Ugochukwu had done enough to become champion.
His victory also delivered a historic milestone for Campos Racing, while Ugochukwu became the first American driver to claim the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship.
The significance of the achievement extends beyond the championship trophy.
Formula 3 is one of the key stages in the pathway towards Formula 2 and ultimately Formula 1. Several drivers who have progressed through the category have gone on to compete at the highest level of motorsport, including current Formula 1 stars such as Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.
