The United States has carried out drone strikes on an Iranian submarine and naval maintenance facility, saying the operation was aimed at reducing Tehran’s ability to target commercial shipping in the Gulf.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the overnight operation used one-way attack drones to hit the facility.
“Last night’s strikes degraded Iran’s ability to continue attacking commercial shipping,” CENTCOM said.
The latest military action follows renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran after a fragile ceasefire arrangement began to unravel. It also comes amid escalating concerns over the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes.
The US has accused Iran of threatening maritime traffic in the region, while Tehran has maintained that its actions are a response to American military involvement in the Gulf.
The strike marks another escalation in the standoff between the two countries, with fears growing that continued hostilities could further disrupt global energy supplies and regional security.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the extent of the damage at the targeted facility, and Iranian authorities had not immediately commented on the reported attack.
