VeryDarkMan’s ₦20,000 Ratel Tripod Faces Price Comparison

Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has come under fresh scrutiny over the pricing of gadgets sold under his Ratel brand, after Nigerians began comparing the reported ₦20,000 price of one of his phone tripods with cheaper listings on Jumia.

The debate gained attention after an X user, Oyindamola, posted that the Ratel tripod was reportedly being sold for ₦20,000, while a similar product listed on Jumia was available for ₦9,290. The comparison has generated reactions from Nigerians, with some questioning the price difference and others defending the activist’s decision to determine the selling price of his products.

The Jumia listing cited in the discussion describes a 170-centimetre aluminium phone tripod fitted with a fill light and Bluetooth remote control. Although its listed price is ₦9,290, it has not been established that the product is identical to the Ratel version in terms of materials, dimensions, accessories or overall build quality.

This distinction is important because products that appear similar in photographs may have different specifications, durability and manufacturing standards. A meaningful comparison would require customers to establish whether both products are the same model and offer the same features.

The controversy has also revived wider conversations about VDM’s transition from social media activism into business. Known for his outspoken criticism of public figures, institutions and perceived wrongdoing, he has increasingly used his online platforms to promote Ratel-branded products, including portable power stations and other electronic accessories.

Supporters have pointed to his public demonstrations of the gadgets as evidence of his willingness to show customers what they are buying. Videos shared through his online channels have featured product demonstrations and details of the Ratel power stations, while the brand has also advertised a physical sales location at Kefiano Autos in Abuja.

In an October 30 product announcement, a Ratel-branded sales video listed a 600-watt portable power station at ₦236,250 and provided prices for other models. The announcement directed prospective buyers to the Abuja location, warning against making payments through unofficial social media channels.

The business has also attracted attention over reports of substantial sales. A report published by Trend Naija on October 31 claimed that Ratel recorded approximately ₦90 million in sales within a day, citing screenshots of bank alerts circulating online. However, the figure has not been independently audited or confirmed, and the value of sales should not be mistaken for the company’s actual profit after expenses.

The latest tripod debate has therefore become more than a discussion about the cost of a phone accessory. For some critics, it raises questions about whether the pricing of Ratel products aligns with the expectations created by VDM’s previous public commentary on accountability and integrity. Supporters, meanwhile, argue that operating a business involves costs beyond the wholesale price of a product and that customers remain free to decide whether an item is worth purchasing.

The conversation is unfolding as the Ratel Movement continues to attract attention through its activities and planned gatherings. Posts circulating online have also mentioned a Ratel Movement Convention scheduled for December 19, 2026, in Abuja, reportedly featuring games, food and discussions about the movement’s future. The event details, including the venue and participation arrangements, have not yet been independently verified.

For now, the growing attention around Ratel presents both an opportunity and a challenge for VDM. Public interest can help a new brand attract customers, but it also places its products, prices, quality and customer service under intense scrutiny.

Ultimately, the strongest response to the criticism may come from clear product specifications, transparent pricing and consistent customer satisfaction rather than online arguments. As Nigerians continue comparing the Ratel tripod with alternatives available on shopping platforms, the question remains whether buyers believe the additional cost is justified by the product they receive.
