Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans and members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Duru’s family announced his passing in a statement shared on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. The family said he died following a brief illness but did not disclose the specific medical condition that led to his death.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.

The announcement was also followed by tributes from the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), whose leadership acknowledged the loss of one of the industry’s respected performers. The guild described Duru as a great thespian in a tribute shared on social media.

Channels Television reported, citing a family source, that the actor died at the National Hospital Abuja at about 10 p.m. on Thursday. However, the family’s public announcement did not provide details of his place or exact time of death.

Duru’s death comes months after he publicly rejected reports circulating on social media that he was critically ill. In June 2026, the actor responded to videos and claims about his health, describing the content as fabricated and malicious. He also criticised the use of manipulated images and artificial intelligence to spread misleading information about public figures.

His earlier denial of those reports makes the news of his death particularly striking, although there is no publicly confirmed evidence linking the earlier online claims to the illness mentioned in the family’s announcement.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Francis Ogide Duru built a career spanning more than three decades. He later moved to Nigeria for his university education, studying Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and graduating in 1996.

Duru began his acting career in 1989, appearing in Missing Mark, directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed film produced by the late Amaka Igwe.

The performance helped establish him as a familiar face in Nollywood and secured his place among the actors who contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s film industry during its formative years.

Over the years, he appeared in numerous productions, including Blood Money, Stigma, Home in Exile, The Good Husband and Mboputa. His work extended beyond acting, with contributions as a producer, director, voice-over artist and master of ceremonies.

His contributions also earned him recognition outside filmmaking. In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award for his influence on young people. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and won Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Away from the screen, Duru was married to Adokiye, whom he met while studying at the University of Port Harcourt. The couple married in 2003 and had four children. Their family suffered a devastating loss in August 2024 when their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died.

The actor’s death marks another painful moment for his family and the Nollywood community, where he was known for his versatility and longstanding contribution to Nigerian filmmaking.

As tributes continue to emerge, questions about the precise cause of his death remain unanswered. His family has not released further medical details or announced funeral arrangements in its initial statement.

Duru leaves behind a body of work that spans generations of Nigerian cinema, including his memorable portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, a role that remains one of the defining performances of his career.
