VIDEO: Court arraigns Nairobi Police Officer over brutal murder of Kenya blogger

Central Police Station officer Samson Kiprotich Talaam has been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in connection with the murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang.

Talaam, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), appeared in court Monday, June 16, 2025.

He was arraigned before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi for a miscellaneous application filed by IPOA.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is seeking to hold Talaam for 21 days.

They say the extra time will allow investigators to gather more evidence linking him to Omondi’s death.

Senior Assistant Director of Investigations, Abdirahaman Jibril, told the court only limited evidence has been collected so far.

“Preliminary findings show the respondent and others at large planned to cover up a brutal assault,” Jibril said.

The assault allegedly happened inside Central Police Station cells, where the deceased was detained.

Albert Omondi later died under suspicious circumstances.

IPOA believes the officers may have coordinated efforts to hide the true cause of his death.

The authority also suspects deliberate tampering of evidence to mislead investigators.

The prosecution argues Talaam’s release could compromise ongoing investigations and intimidate witnesses.

“He may interfere with evidence or coerce junior officers,” Jibril stated.

IPOA also  wants to detain him for three weeks to complete forensic analysis and identify co-suspects.

Magistrate Ekhubi is expected to rule on the detention request on Tuesday.

The courtroom was filled with tense faces, including family members of the deceased.

Outside court, human rights groups demanded justice and accountability in Omondi’s death.

They accused police of turning holding cells into torture chambers.

“We want answers. No one is above the law,” one protester said.

Talaam, in a dark suit, did not speak during the session.

His lawyers declined to comment pending the magistrate’s ruling.

IPOA insists the case highlights rising police impunity and systemic cover-ups.

The late Albert Omondi was arrested last week during a routine operation in downtown Nairobi.

His family was reportedly unaware of his death until they visited the station days later.

The case has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for police reform in Kenya.
